I have noticed, at least on my computer, that in the Single-player game if you click first in the 'mini-map' before clicking anywhere else, then a bug happens where you can't tag areas for digging. I can reproduce this bug every time, so if you are having the problem then click somewhere else. Picking up an imp and dropping it usually prevents the bug from happening. Once the bug happens there is NOTHING you can do to recover! You must re-start the game.
