The
strongest point in this game is the artificial
intelligence. By that, I
refer to the MONSTERS' intelligence. When it
comes to the enemy keepers' AI, I think Bullfrog
missed the point. Here's an example; this
happened to me
last night.
I was in Level 8. In this level, you have to kick
out an enemy keeper. His
lair is in the middle of the map, yours is in the
lower-left corner. I built
mine as fast as I could, took possession of my
part of the island, mined all
the gold I could find -- all was going very well.
Not once I thought about
clicking on the '?' icon to see the enemy
keeper's progress. I went on,
digging and mining and claiming territory, until
I felt ready to storm his
island. I started to dig on his island, razing
all that wasn't stone, and to
my unbelieving eyes, I saw that his dungeon was
so small, it could actually
fit in my torture chamber, ROOMS AND ALL. Gee.
And since I'm the kind of
player who builds slowly, I had been playing for
about an hour, so time was
no excuse to him. I built a guard post just
beside the entrance to his
dungeon, and placed a LEGION of my creatures
there -- about ten wizards,
five mistresses, seven demon spawns, three bile
demons, one barbarian, even
nine ghosts. And all my creatures were at
MAX-LEVEL. Then, only then,
curiosity made me press the '?' button. Oh my.
The enemy had 4 rooms and...
0 creatures. Yes, 0 creatures. He had a dozen
imps, that's all. Furious, I
stormed his dungeon and captured his imps. His
dungeon heart fell in less
than one second, it was incredible.
My guess on what happened is that the computer
ran out of gold, so his
minions left him. But why then didn't he mine
more gold? I don't know. He
had a treasury north of his dungeon, but it was
empty, and JUST BEHIND ITS
WALLS was the bigest gold seam of them all. He
had just to dig out ONE
SINGLE STUPID SQUARE and about 30,000 gold pieces
were his.
Talk about intelligence.
A bug in the AI? Let's have it!
